Besides doing their coursework, students can develop their professionalism by participating in professional student organizations that provide contact with professional engineers as well as other engineering students.

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
AIAA is open to all students interested in the field of aerospace engineering. Students typically organize at least one guest seminar each semester on a topic of interest in the aerospace field as well as one field trip to an aerospace industry location. AIAA meets approximately once per month to discuss aerospace topics in the department, fund raising ideas and community service. At least once per school year we try to also organize a trip to places such as a museum, an air show or just camping in the woods.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers
ASME is perhaps the most popular professional student organization in our Department. The mission of the West Virginia University ASME Collegiate Chapter is to provide opportunities for students to gain broader insight into the mechanical engineering profession. The ASME Student Chapter invites practicing engineers to campus to present seminars, arranges field trips to research and engineering establishments, and helps to organize the Annual WVU Pumpkin Drop.

MA is the premier professional organization for students interested in materials science and engineering. MA is the largest materials science and engineering organization in the U.S. and is comprised of four sub-organizations. Opportunities for personal and professional development for members by participating in chapter events and access to resources to build a solid career foundation.
MRS is an organization of materials researchers worldwide that promotes communication for the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research and technology to improve the quality of life.

Society of Automotive Engineers
The mission of the West Virginia University SAE International® Collegiate Chapter is to provide opportunities for students to gain broader insight into the engineering profession. The SAE Student Chapter invites practicing engineers to the campus to present seminars, arranges field trips to research and engineering establishments, and participates in local Pittsburgh Professional Section activities. Both students and faculty are active members of SAE and some of them hold leadership positions in SAE committees. WVU students participate annually in the Formula SAE® and Baja SAE® competitions.

SWE is an international organization focused on stimulating women to achieve their full potential in their careers as engineers and leaders. West Virginia University's section of SWE is dedicated to K-12 STEM outreach, professional development, and promoting women in engineering.

Society of Hispanic and Professional Engineers
SHPE's 2020 to 2021 goal is aimed at providing mentoring, academic, and professional support to WVU students, particularly Latinx, Hispanic, and underrepresented students in the STEM field. We look to provide networking opportunities to all members via the annual national conference and also through bi-monthly to monthly meetings we have with professionals in various engineering or engineering related fields.

With more than 700 chapters and more than 21,000 active members in the U.S. and abroad, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. NSBE, founded in 1975, supports and promotes the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering and technology. NSBE's mission is "to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community."
